How can I safely use older high-trigger-voltage flashes on a modern camera hot shoe?

Some older flash units have high trigger voltages that could damage newer cameras if connected directly through the hot shoe. I currently avoid this by using a PC sync connection and a cold-shoe adapter so there is no direct high-voltage contact through the camera’s hot shoe. Is there an accessory that fits between the camera hot shoe and the flash to isolate or reduce the trigger voltage so I can safely use these older flashes?

Yes, the Wein Safesync is designed to do exactly that:

Yes. A hot-shoe voltage isolator such as the Wein Safe-Sync is made for this purpose. It sits between the camera and the flash and is designed to protect modern cameras from older flashes with high trigger voltages.

If you continue using older flashes, it’s still wise to verify your camera’s maximum safe trigger voltage in the manual and confirm the flash trigger voltage before connecting anything directly.
