I have several no-name LED lights and only need a rough way to rank them for use: the better ones for studio or product lighting, the worse ones for garage/workshop use. Is there a simple DIY method to compare their color rendering?
I tried photographing a ColorChecker under different lights with a DSLR, then setting white balance from the white patch in Lightroom. The results did not make differences as obvious as what I saw by eye. Are there better subjects, patches, or procedures to use for a rough comparison of CRI without specialized instruments?

A color checker is not meant to do white balance only. It is to make a custom light-camera profile.
As you can read in that post, the produced adjustments are not simple curves but can be different shaped ones.
I do not know the quality of the color patches of your target, but you need to complement a color profile using a software that:
- recognizes that pattern
- make adjustments
- and prepare a color profile to be applied to the sets of photos.

You can only get a rough comparison without a spectrometer, but a controlled photo test can help.
Use a known neutral target first: a grayscale/neutral patch is useful for checking whether the light stays neutral from shadows to highlights. A ColorChecker already includes such patches.
