How can I remove iPhoto/Aperture keywords like “iPhoto Original” and Faces without deleting other photo metadata?

I moved from iPhoto to Aperture and am considering moving again, possibly to Lightroom. Many of my photos now carry unwanted keywords such as “iPhoto Original” and Face-related tags, and these show up when I upload them to Flickr.

What’s the easiest way to remove those specific keywords from a large photo library without stripping out the rest of the EXIF/IPTC metadata?

In your inspector window, select the folder or section that has the photos with the troubled tag. then in that folder select all the photos for most efficiency (either edit>select all, or command+A). now in the menu bar, select "metadata>remove keyword>remove all keywords" that will take care of the "iphoto original" tag without harming other data you want attached to the photo.

If your photos are still managed in Aperture, the simplest solution is to remove the unwanted keywords there rather than deleting all metadata.

Two methods mentioned:

  • Select the affected folder/project, then select all photos and use Metadata > Remove Keyword (or remove all keywords if that’s acceptable).
  • Better yet, open Window > Show Keywords HUD, select the unwanted keyword such as “iPhoto Original”, and delete it. You can do the same for Face-related keywords.

This removes those keywords without wiping the rest of your EXIF/IPTC data.

If you need to work on files outside Aperture, command-line metadata tools like ExifTool or jhead can also edit metadata, but the community answers don’t give a specific workflow for them. For the easiest and safest approach based on the answers provided, use Aperture’s keyword tools to delete only the unwanted tags.
