How can I reattach a loose wide panel on a Canon Speedlite 580EX II?

The pull-out wide panel/diffuser on a rented Canon Speedlite 580EX II came off when I tried to slide it back in. I can place it back on the black mounting bar with the spring in its notch and the end tabs in their holes, but it remains very loose. It slides back into the flash, but pops off again when I pull it out. Nothing appears visibly broken. Is there a proper way to reattach it so it stays in place, or does this indicate worn or damaged parts?

As it turns out, the little nubs that make the panel stay in place had worn down and finally gotten to the point where they were to small to reliably hold the panel in place.
The rental place swapped my unit for a working one.

If it’s correctly reassembled but still won’t stay attached, the most likely cause is wear in the retaining tabs/nubs rather than user error. In the reported case, the small nubs that hold the wide panel in place had worn down enough that the panel would no longer stay secured. If the spring and tabs are seated properly and it still pops off, there usually isn’t a simple adjustment to fix it. For a rental unit, the right solution is to return or exchange the flash rather than force the panel or attempt a repair.
