I’m looking for tips on photographing LEGO creations so they show well in photos. My main problem is lighting, especially glare and reflections from large flat plastic surfaces, but I’d also appreciate any general techniques for getting cleaner, more flattering shots of models.

Use soft, diffused light rather than a direct on-camera flash or bare lamp. Glare on shiny LEGO surfaces is usually reduced by making the light source larger and softer—try window light through a curtain, a light tent, or lamps bounced through white paper or fabric. Move the lights and camera angle until reflections fall away from the most important surfaces.
A few other helpful basics:
- Use a simple, uncluttered background.
- Put the model on a stable surface and use a tripod if possible.
- Use a low ISO for cleaner detail.
- Stop down a bit for more depth of field if the whole model needs to be sharp.
- If color looks off, set white balance to match your light source.
For close shots, avoid shooting too wide and too close, which can distort the model. A slightly longer focal length and a bit more distance often gives a more natural look. Take several test shots while adjusting light position, because small changes make a big difference with reflective plastic.
