How should I position lights to photograph books and magazines without glare?

I’m photographing books in a cradle that opens to about 120°, and I’m struggling with reflections on glossy pages and magazine covers. I want lighting that covers the whole cradle evenly while avoiding glare. Where should I place the lights relative to the camera and subject, and are there general setup tips that help with glossy surfaces?

The biggest light source you can find. This could involve using a light tent.
There is an excellent book which covers this subject, called "Light, Science and Magic". It is avaiable from amazon.co.uk and amazon.com. This book gives you the tools to work out not just what will work for different lighting situations, but why it will work.

To reduce glare on glossy pages, place the lights so they cannot reflect straight into the camera. A good rule is angle of incidence = angle of reflection: if light would “bounce” from the page into the lens, move the lights lower and farther to the sides so the reflection misses the camera.
For even lighting, use a symmetrical setup with one light on each side of the cradle. Moving the lights farther away also helps make illumination more even across the full 120° spread, because the distance difference from one part of the book to another becomes less significant.
Using a larger, softer light source can also help, such as broad diffusion or a light tent. If possible, move the camera back and use a longer focal length; this increases the safe area where lights can be placed without causing reflections.
In short: use two matching lights, placed symmetrically, relatively low and off to the sides, keep them out of the reflection path to the camera, and favor larger diffused sources for smoother coverage.
