How can I mount a GoPro to a DSLR without using the hot shoe?

I want to attach a GoPro to my DSLR to record behind-the-scenes video during photo shoots, but my hot shoe is already in use. The camera’s bottom tripod socket is probably the only free mounting point. What mounting options work for this?

$10 will get you a flash bracket that gives you a coldshoe or tripod thread to the right or left of your camera body.

Even cheeper than that is some scrap steel, and a 1/4"-20 bolt.

Yes. A simple solution is to use a flash bracket that screws into the camera’s 1/4"-20 tripod socket and provides an offset mounting point to the side of the camera. Many brackets include either a cold shoe or an additional tripod thread, which can be adapted for a GoPro mount.

If you want a very low-cost DIY option, you can make a basic side bracket from scrap metal and a 1/4"-20 bolt using the camera’s tripod socket.

The key idea is to use the bottom tripod mount to create a side-mounted attachment point, since the hot shoe is unavailable.
