How can I make a slightly soft silhouette edge look sharper in Photoshop?

I have a photo of a bird silhouette that is a little out of focus. The outline is still recognizable, but the edge looks soft and feathery. Regular sharpening helps somewhat, but I’m wondering if Photoshop can improve the appearance further. What tools or workflow would work best for making a silhouette edge appear crisper without worrying about fine detail inside the subject?

You can probably use curves/levels adjustment to increase the contrast of the edge to give the appearance of a sharper edge. Since it's a silhouette, you don't have (much) detail to worry about. By making the transition between light and dark as contrasty as possible, the edge should appear sharper.
As far as sharpening goes, I would try a high pass filter for an edge like that.
- Duplicate layer
- Filter > Other > High Pass
- since the edge is blurry, try a higher radius than normal, possibly 5-10 pixels (depends on resolution of image and amount of blur you have)
- change layer blending mode to Overlay
- use a mask to apply the sharpening just to the edges you want to sharpen (fill mask with black, then paint white where you want sharpening)

Yes—because it’s a silhouette, you can often improve the appearance of sharpness even if you can’t truly restore lost focus.
Two useful approaches:
-
Increase edge contrast Use Curves or Levels to make the dark subject darker and the background lighter. A steeper transition between dark and light makes the outline look sharper.
-
Selective high-pass sharpening
- Duplicate the layer
- Go to Filter > Other > High Pass
- Use a somewhat larger radius than usual for a soft edge, roughly 5–10 px depending on image size and blur
- Set the layer blend mode to Overlay
- Add a mask and apply the effect only where needed along the silhouette edge
This works well here because there’s little internal detail to protect. Keep expectations realistic: Photoshop can enhance contrast and edge definition, but it can’t fully recover detail lost to focus blur.
