How can I keep my face aligned for a daily self-portrait time-lapse?

I want to make an "everyday"-style self-portrait time-lapse, but without using a dedicated app. Right now my camera position and my face placement vary from shot to shot, so the sequence doesn’t line up well. What’s the best way to keep the camera and my face in the same place every day, and how can I make my expression consistent enough for the montage to look smooth?

Put the camera on a tripod or some other support, make sure the tripod is exactly in the same location every day (making a mark on the floor with some tape can help)
Stand in exactly the same place everyday (again, some tape on the floor can help)
About the expression, experiment, try to find the most "repeatable" expression for you (smile 3 times in a row, then make a natural face 3 times in a row...)

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
Use a fixed setup and simple reference marks. Mount the camera on a tripod or other stable support, and keep it in the exact same position each day. Mark the tripod feet on the floor with tape so you can return it to the same spot. Also mark where you stand so your distance and body position stay consistent.
To help with head placement, put a mirror behind the camera and draw a large oval or guideline on it. Then you can line your face up to that shape before taking each photo.
For expression, don’t aim for something complicated. Choose a very simple, repeatable look—such as a neutral face or a slight closed-mouth smile—and practice it a few times in a row to find what you can reproduce most reliably.
You probably won’t get every frame perfectly identical, but a stable camera position, fixed standing marks, and a visual guide will make the sequence much smoother and easier to align later if needed.
