How can I keep camera and flash batteries organized as charged or empty before and during an event?

For small events, I carry several types of batteries: DSLR batteries, AA cells for a flash, and AAA cells for wireless triggers. I want a simple, reliable way to tell which batteries are charged and which are used, both when packing before the event and when swapping batteries on the day. What are some practical ways photographers organize and mark batteries so nothing gets missed?

Separate pockets. Charged in the right side, dead in the left. You don't have time to be messing around. Fast, Quick, Simple.
I also carry a spare brick with me (20 pack of disposables). Sometimes you need them on the 16 plus hour days.

Yes—simple physical systems work best.
Common approaches:
- keep charged and used batteries in different pockets or compartments, e.g. charged on one side of the bag, depleted on the other
- use tape as a clear status marker: put a small strip across camera-battery terminals, or across the ends of AA/AAA cells; remove it before use so the state is obvious
- store batteries in labeled plastic cases marked “charged” and “used”
- use color-coded rechargeable sets so matching cells stay together and are easy to identify
A good workflow is to swap used cells immediately into the “used” location and recharge them as soon as you get home. For AA/AAA, low-self-discharge rechargeables are especially convenient because they hold charge well between shoots.
The key is consistency: pick one method and use it every time so you never have to guess.
