How can I import photos from a Canon 550D to a Mac without installing Canon software?

I want to connect my Canon 550D/T2i to my Mac over USB, but I’d prefer not to install Canon’s software. When I plug the camera in, nothing appears in Finder or iPhoto. Is there a built-in Mac way to access or import the photos, and are there any settings I should check?

  1. Get a SD-Card reader (or use the one in your MacBook pro if you have one)
  2. Have you tried "Image Capture" – there's some settings that will set default behavior of what happens when you connect the camera.
  3. Have you tried iPhoto?

Yes. You generally should not need Canon software just to import photos from a Canon 550D/T2i on a Mac.

Try Apple’s built-in Image Capture app. Connect the camera by USB, open Image Capture, and look for the 550D in the device list. Image Capture also controls what app launches when a camera or card is connected, so check its settings if iPhoto is not opening automatically.

A few users report the camera is detected more reliably if you:

  • connect it while the camera is off,
  • open iPhoto or Image Capture,
  • then turn the camera on,
  • and press the camera’s Play/Review button.

Finder typically won’t show the camera like a normal drive, so use Image Capture, iPhoto, Lightroom, or similar import software instead.

If USB connection is still unreliable, the simplest workaround is to remove the SD card and use an SD card reader (or the built-in reader on some MacBook Pro models). That is often the easiest way to access the photos without any Canon software.
