How can I get my Nikon D90 LCD to show images again before or after shooting?

My Nikon D90 still takes photos, but the rear LCD no longer behaves the way I expect. I can play back photos after taking them, but I thought I used to be able to glance at the screen while shooting and then use the optical viewfinder to take the shot, without using full Live View. Is there a setting to turn that back on, or does the D90 only allow either the viewfinder or Live View?

Like rumtscho has said, what you are requesting cannot be done on the D90. I own a D90 and I can say that I only have these options (when exposing for images):
- Use ViewFinder (LiveView disabled)
- Use LiveView (ViewFinder disabled)
- Shoot Tethered (ViewFinder/LiveView disabled [though techically is liveview with image capture being presented over USB rather than LCD on back of camera])
I can however do as ahockley suggested and use image review after I have taken an image. The menu also allows you to setup the camera to automatically show the last image taken for x amount of time period after exposure.
If you go into the menu you can reset to the defaults and this should put the camera back to the way when you first purchased it and will restore back to the factory settings (which potentially will not do what you requested due to the physical limitations of this DSLR)

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
On the Nikon D90, you generally have two shooting modes: use the optical viewfinder with Live View off, or use Live View by pressing the Lv button. The camera does not provide a normal pre-shot LCD preview while still using the optical viewfinder.
If what you want is to see the photo immediately after you take it, turn on Image Review in the Playback menu. That will display the last image automatically for a short time after capture.
So:
- For a live scene preview on the rear screen: press the Lv button.
- For automatic display after taking a photo: enable Image Review.
- For normal shooting through the finder without Live View: the rear LCD won’t show a live preview.
If your settings seem odd, resetting the camera menus to defaults may also restore expected behavior.
