How can I get motivated to start shooting again after a long break?

I’ve been away from photography for almost a year and I’m finding it hard to get back into it. Local photo communities feel different now, and buying a new lens didn’t really help. For photographers who’ve gone through a similar slump, what helped you restart and enjoy shooting again?

  1. Grab your camera
  2. Grab some film
  3. Take a picture.
  4. (optional) Repeat step #3

Also, consider not equating gear with photographing. Having a library card does not make someone a good reader.

A long break doesn’t mean you have to “start from zero.” The simplest advice is often the best: pick up your camera and start taking pictures again, even if it’s just one small outing at a time. Momentum usually comes from shooting, not from waiting to feel ready.

A few ideas mentioned that can help:

  • Don’t rely on gear alone for motivation. New equipment can be fun, but it doesn’t automatically restore creativity.
  • Try a fresh challenge or technique if it genuinely interests you: an unusual lens, filters, pinhole, tilt-shift, fisheye, etc. A new creative constraint can make photography feel playful again.
  • Change your environment. A trip, vacation, or even a local outing somewhere visually different can be very effective if your usual surroundings feel stale.

In short: lower the pressure, shoot something simple, and look for either a new subject or a new way to see familiar ones. The key is to re-establish the habit of photographing.
