How can I focus closer with a Bushnell Spacemaster digiscoping adapter?

I’m using an old Bushnell Spacemaster spotting scope with an eyepiece-projection camera adapter, T-ring, and a Canon Rebel XT. The setup works, but when mounted this way it won’t focus on subjects closer than roughly 60–80 meters before the scope’s focus knob runs out of travel. The scope by itself can focus much closer, around 5–10 meters. Is there any way to improve the close-focus range of this digiscoping setup?

If you want to make your minimal focus point nearer, you could try technics derived from macro photography, such as an extension tube or close-up lens filters.

I don't know which one will make the correction you want but it probably exists.

Yes—if you want the setup to focus closer, you may need to add optics or spacing similar to macro-photography accessories. The community suggestion was to try either:

  • extension tubes, or
  • close-up lens filters

These can shift the focusing range toward nearer subjects. In general, accessories that increase extension tend to improve close-focus ability, though they may also affect overall focusing range and image quality. Close-up optics can do something similar by altering the optical system so nearer subjects come into focus.

With an eyepiece-projection digiscoping setup, it’s normal for the usable focus range to change compared with the scope alone. So yes, there are ways to move the near-focus point inward, but it will likely take some experimentation to see which accessory gives the correction you need.
