I know one of my Nikon lenses uses 52mm filters, but I also have two Sigma lenses and I can’t see the filter size marked clearly. Where can I find the correct filter thread size for a Sigma lens?

There is always a specification. You will find it in three places:

  1. On the lens, either at the edge around the front optical element or on the side of the barrel.
  2. In the manual that came with your lens.
  3. On the web. Here is one on Sigma's site. Click Tech Specs to see the table where it says Filter-Size.

There will be many numbers on the lens itself but you can almost always guess which one is the filter-size because it corresponds to the diameter of the filter-thread.

Filtering just means changing something. Polarizing is one type of filter which only lets light through with a certain polarization. There are many other types of filters too.

You can usually find a Sigma lens’s filter size in a few easy places:

  • On the lens itself: look around the front rim near the front element, or sometimes on the side of the barrel. The filter size is usually shown in millimeters and may be next to the filter-thread symbol.
  • On the lens cap: many caps are marked with the size they fit, such as “86 mm.”
  • In the lens manual or on Sigma’s website under the lens specifications.
  • By measuring: the filter size matches the diameter of the front filter threads in millimeters.

So if it’s not obvious at first glance, check the front ring, the cap, or the published specs. Measuring the thread diameter is a last resort if nothing is marked.
