How can I access or export an Aperture preview image from the library package?

I’m using Aperture and my referenced master files aren’t currently available, but I’d still like to share the generated preview version of an image online. Is there a way to export or locate the preview file directly, rather than taking a screenshot?

Last time I used Aperture, I went into my iPhoto/Aperture Library file. It appears as a package/single-file in Finder, but it's actually just a folder. Control-click or use Right-Click on a two button mouse (a.k.a. "Secondary Click," many ways to use this) and select "Show Package Contents. Through here you will be able to navigate to various folders with previews, older versions, etc. etc. You could do a finder search once inside and narrow it down by size and name and search scope to just that folder. should be quite small. less than 50k methinks, if not a fraction of that.

This will vary quite a bit depending on what version of Aperture/iPhoto you've been using, if they are "Sharing" a library, etc.

Last version of Aperture I used was 2, and I had the library separate from my iPhoto, but I know the latest versions now share the Library File, in which case it should probably be in your "HOME" folder, in the "Pictures" Folder.

Yes. In Aperture, the library file shown in Finder is actually a package. You can Control-click or right-click the Aperture library and choose Show Package Contents to browse the internal folders. The preview JPEGs are typically stored somewhere inside that package, though the exact folder structure can vary by Aperture version and whether the library is shared with iPhoto.

Once inside, use Finder search within the package and narrow by filename, size, or image type to locate the preview. Then copy that file out for sharing.

So the practical approach is:

  1. Find your Aperture library in Finder.
  2. Right-click it and choose Show Package Contents.
  3. Look for preview-related folders or search inside the package.
  4. Copy the preview image to another location.

A screenshot is a fallback, but accessing the preview file directly should give you the actual generated preview image if it exists in the library.
