I’ve recently been very moved by Yousuf Karsh’s portraits and would like a good starting resource to better understand how he revealed his subjects’ character. I’m less interested in a purely technical lighting manual and more in insight into his intent, posing, perspective, and the psychological side of his portraits. Is there a good beginner-friendly book on Karsh, or another resource worth starting with?

Karsh's own book, Karsh: A Biography in Images, is about the best there is for that. Beyond the biography, each of the photographs in the book includes a blurb about the reason the portrait was done in a particular way, what the pose, perspective and lighting were meant to capture. It's shy on the technical details if you're looking for "Karsh recipes", but it is a great source of insight into the psychological and iconographical aspects of his work.

A strong place to start is Karsh: A Biography in Images by Karsh himself. Based on the community feedback, it does more than present the photographs: it also includes commentary on why particular portraits were made the way they were, including the intended effect of the pose, perspective, and lighting. That makes it especially useful if you want insight into the character and psychology behind his portraits rather than just technical setups.

If you’re hoping for step-by-step “how to light like Karsh” recipes, this may not go very deep technically. But for understanding his thinking and approach to portraiture, it sounds like the best starting point.

As a companion resource, karsh.org is also worth visiting for background information and anecdotes that add context to his work.
