I’m deciding between a Nikon D60 and a Nikon D5100 as a first DSLR. Which is the better choice for a beginner or entry-level photographer? Also, I’ve seen cases where the D5100 is priced lower even though the D60 is older. Does that mean the D60 is actually better?

The Nikon D60 is a very old version of the D5100. The D5000 was actually between the two in the models history. The D5100 is a step up in every important aspect, if the price is the same, I see no reason why to get the D60 over the D5100. The D5100 is the current up to date model with great high ISO performance, a flip out screen, and other current day features.

For a beginner, the Nikon D5100 is the better choice. Based on the community answers, it is a newer generation camera and a clear step up from the D60 in the important areas, including overall features and high-ISO performance. It also offers more modern conveniences such as a flip-out screen.

The D60 is an older model, and the D5000 series came after it, with the D5100 being a later improvement. So the D60’s age does not make it better.

If you’re seeing the older D60 listed at a higher price, that does not mean it is the superior camera. Used-camera pricing can vary for many reasons, including condition, seller expectations, bundle contents, or unusual market demand. Price alone is not a reliable indicator of which model is better.

If both are available at similar cost, there is little reason to choose the D60 over the D5100 for a first camera.
