For a beginner, should I choose a Nikon D3100 or Canon EOS 550D with the 18-55mm kit lens?

I’m new to photography and comparing the Nikon D3100 and Canon EOS 550D, both with the standard 18-55mm kit lens. The main differences I’ve noticed are that the Canon costs about $200 more and has 18MP instead of 14MP on the Nikon. As a beginner, would I notice a meaningful difference in image quality, or is it better to save the money and choose based on other factors?

For a beginner I'd say 4 megapixels is neither here nor there. The image quality of both cameras will be remarkably similar, and in fact the biggest differences will be ergonomics and price.
You're probably right to trust your instincts and go for the Nikon, maybe spend the $200 you've saved on a 50mm f/1.8 lens and a tripod. Before you do this it's worth going into a camera shop and holding both cameras, testing out the controls and seeing how easily you can navigate the menus.
For a beginner having a camera that is comfortable in your hand and easy to use is far more important than 4 megapixels.

For a beginner, the 4MP difference is unlikely to matter much. With the 18-55mm kit lens, overall image quality between these two cameras will be quite similar in normal use.
The more important differences are price and handling. If the Nikon saves you money, that can be a smart choice—especially if you put the savings toward useful extras like a fast 50mm lens or a tripod.
Before buying, try to handle both cameras in person. Comfort in the hand, how the controls feel, and how easy the menus are to use will matter more to your day-to-day shooting than the megapixel count. For a beginner, a camera that feels intuitive and comfortable is usually the better pick.
