Does the Nikon D7200 viewfinder grid use battery power when the camera is off?

I use a Nikon D7200 and reassigned the Pv button from the viewfinder grid to playback. The viewfinder grid remains visible even when I switch the camera off. Will leaving the grid displayed drain the battery, or is its power use negligible?

The displayed grid per se draws almost zero power from your battery (imagine a dumb/classical digital (LCD) wristwatch with a small button cell battery lasting for 10+ years) - unless you use display illumination etc.

If the viewfinder backlit were on for all the time, this could mean quite serious battery discharge problem though.

In normal use, the D7200’s viewfinder grid should have little to no meaningful effect on battery life when the camera is off. The grid display itself uses extremely little power, and cameras typically enter a near-zero-power state shortly after being switched off or left idle.

The main exception would be if some kind of viewfinder illumination or backlight were being kept on continuously, which could increase battery drain. But the grid alone is generally not a battery concern.

So, if you’re only seeing the grid pattern remain visible, you likely do not need to worry about noticeable battery consumption.
