Does an underwater housing protect the lens as well as the camera body?

I’m planning to use a Sony A6000 in a Nauticam underwater housing. In product photos, the housing is often shown with a lens attached, but I can’t tell how the lens itself is protected underwater. Does the lens also go inside the housing, or do I need a separate underwater lens case or a special underwater lens?

If I've got a decent Box and have the means to protect the camera underwater, the lenses aren't IN the box how are they protected?

Underwater housings completely contain both the body and the lens. It looks like the Nauticam setup has various lens housings that mate with the body housing, and you'll certainly need both parts.

Yes—the lens is protected by the underwater housing too. In a typical system like Nauticam, the camera body sits inside the main housing and the lens is enclosed by a matching front section/port that attaches to that housing. So the lens is not exposed directly to the water.

In practice, you usually need:

  • the camera housing for the body, and
  • a compatible port or lens housing for the specific lens you want to use.

You generally do not need a special “underwater lens case” separate from the housing system. You also do not usually need a special underwater lens just to make the setup waterproof—the housing and port provide that protection. The key is making sure the housing and port are compatible with both your camera and your chosen lens.
