Do you stop and shoot spontaneous scenes, or come back later?

I often notice scenes while driving that would make great photos, but I tell myself to return later with my camera. Sometimes I do, but sometimes the moment is gone — the light changes, the subject disappears, or the location gets altered.

How do other photographers handle this? Do you usually stop and take the photo immediately, or plan to come back later? What practical factors make you stop or keep going?

I try to keep my camera in the car when I can (when temps inside a parked car allow), but I still find myself failing to stop because:

  • I don't want to cause a traffic hazard
  • There's no good place to park
  • I don't want someone getting upset that I'm taking a photo of their property
  • I'm late
  • It's too cold outside
  • It's too hot outside
  • It'll probably be there tomorrow (whatever it is)

Thanks for the reminder that the camera's not going to operate itself!

Many photographers mean to return later, but in practice the scene often changes before they do. A common approach is to stop and shoot when possible, especially if the light or subject is temporary, but real-world limits often get in the way.

Reasons people don’t stop include unsafe traffic conditions, no legal parking, being late, uncomfortable weather, concern about photographing private property, or simply assuming the scene will still be there tomorrow. On trips or in “vacation mode,” people are much more likely to stop because they already have gear with them and are mentally prepared to slow down.

A practical takeaway: if spontaneous opportunities matter to you, keep a camera with you when feasible and safe. A small compact camera can make this easier. But only stop when you can do so legally and without creating a hazard. If you can’t stop, make a note and return as soon as possible—especially for scenes that depend on fleeting light like sunsets.
