Do any cameras connect to an existing Wi-Fi network for wireless photo transfer?

I’m considering my first interchangeable-lens camera for photographing birds from my window. I’ve used a Pentax K-70 and like it, but its Wi‑Fi works by creating its own network rather than joining my home Wi‑Fi. I’d prefer a camera that can connect to my existing wireless network so I can transfer photos to a phone or tablet without changing the device’s Wi‑Fi settings each time. Do cameras offer this, or is the usual approach still direct camera-to-phone Wi‑Fi?

Some of Canon's extreme upper tier cameras allow the camera to join an existing network when using an external WFT (Wireless File Transmitter) unit. Even those cameras that also have internal WiFi capability, such as the EOS 1D X Mark III, require that the external WFT unit be used to join an external network.

Most cameras with built-in Wi‑Fi are designed to create their own direct connection to a phone or tablet, rather than join your home network. That’s intentional: it lets you control and transfer from the camera anywhere, even when no local Wi‑Fi is available.

Joining an existing Wi‑Fi network is much less common. According to the answers, some very high-end Canon bodies can do it, but only when used with an external Wireless File Transmitter accessory—not just with their standard built-in Wi‑Fi.

So in practice, if you want this feature, your options are limited and usually expensive. A possible workaround mentioned in the answers is to use an SD card with Wi‑Fi networking capability that can connect to wireless networks independently.

In short: yes, it exists, but mostly on specialized pro setups with extra hardware. For most consumer and enthusiast cameras, direct camera-created Wi‑Fi is still the normal method.
