Discreet RF shutter remote for a Canon XSi with long range

I’m looking for a small, discreet RF remote shutter release for a Canon XSi (EOS 450D). I want something with roughly 150 feet of range, but without a large telescoping antenna or bulky handheld transmitter. The goal is to trigger self-portraits during a play as unobtrusively as possible. Are there compatible RF options that are compact and practical for this use?

Consider using RF flash triggers. Most of them can connect the sync port output of a receiver unit to your camera's shutter cable release port via a cable (e.g., PC -> 2.5mm minijack if you're using a Canon dRebel model), and you simply use the transmitter as your in-hand remote.

None of the transmitter units, as far as I know, have a telescoping antenna on them (if that's what you mean by "giant silver radio stick"). I've used Yongnuo RF-602 triggers as shutter remotes. An RF-603II or RF-605 can be used the same way, and they'll also double-duty as remote flash triggers. They will have less capability than a dedicated RF shutter release, but you can get half-press and full press, the range is good, and the units are generally pretty small and discreet.

A practical option is to use RF flash triggers as a shutter remote. Some trigger systems let the receiver connect to the camera’s shutter-release port with the proper cable, while the transmitter acts as the handheld remote.

For a Canon XSi, community members specifically mention Yongnuo RF-602, RF-603II, and RF-605 units being used this way. These transmitters are small and do not use the large telescoping “silver stick” antenna you want to avoid. They can provide half-press and full-press shutter control, and their range is generally good for this kind of use.

They may have fewer features than a dedicated RF shutter release, but they are compact, discreet, and can also serve double duty as remote flash triggers.
