Could a third-party battery permanently damage a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20?

I used a generic replacement battery from eBay in my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20. It worked for one session, but after recharging it the camera briefly turned on and then off. After charging longer, the battery compartment became extremely hot, and since then the camera will not power on at all.

Is there any chance the camera might work again with a genuine Panasonic battery or AC adapter, or is the damage likely permanent? I'm trying to understand whether it is worth testing with an OEM power source before assuming the camera needs repair.

Unfortunately we do not know what died. If its the camera, it will need to be fixed which is most likely. Sorry to hear your lesson about saving on batteries was costly.

If you know a camera store with good service, go there and ask if they can try a replacement in your camera. If the camera does not turn on there, it is likely that it can be repaired but camera repair is notoriously expensive and worth it only for a camera of a certain value.

It’s possible the problem is only the battery, but based on what you describe—especially the battery compartment getting extremely hot—the camera itself may also have been damaged.

From the symptoms alone, no one can tell exactly what failed. The simplest next step is to test the camera with a known-good OEM battery or the correct AC adapter, ideally at a reputable camera shop if you don’t want to buy parts first. If the camera powers up normally, the generic battery was likely the main issue. If it still won’t turn on, the camera probably needs repair.

Unfortunately, camera repair can be expensive relative to the value of an older model like the FZ20, so it may not be economical unless the fix is minor. Stop using the hot battery immediately, since overheating suggests a faulty battery or charging problem and could be unsafe.
