I need a comfortable, fairly compact bag for carrying a Nikon D90 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. I’d prefer something that fits the camera body and lens together in one case, similar in size and style to a small Lowepro bag or holster that’s easy to carry around. What type of bag should I look for?

I use Tamrac bags, and prefer the holster-style bags.
Their version that would fit a DSLR and 70-200 lens is the Pro Digital Zoom 10.
My favorite part of their system is the MAS Accessory system, which allows you to hook on extra lens bags.

A holster-style bag is a good match for this setup. These are designed to carry a DSLR with a longer lens attached, while staying more compact than a full shoulder bag or backpack.
From the community suggestion, the Tamrac Pro Digital Zoom 10 is an example sized for a DSLR with a 70-200mm lens. Tamrac’s MAS accessory system was also mentioned as useful if you want to attach extra pouches later for another lens or accessories.
In general, when shopping, look for a holster or zoom bag specifically rated to fit a DSLR with a 70-200mm f/2.8 mounted. That should give you the compact, easy-to-carry form factor you want while still fitting the D90 and lens together.
