Canon Rebel T4i freezes in Live View when changing shooting mode

My Canon Rebel T4i became completely unresponsive while using Live View. None of the buttons worked, including the power switch, and the only way to recover it was to remove the battery. It seemed to happen when I changed the mode dial while Live View was active. Is this normal DSLR behavior, operator error, or a sign of a fault?

Doesn't sound normal. I'd advise you to update to the latest firmware, but there are none that have been provided for the T4i/650D yet. So your best shot would be to bring it to the Canon Service center and get it looked at. Or even better, get it exchanged in the shop if it's still possible. If you manage to reproduce the issue consistently, it also would be good to report the problem to canon directly so that they can confirm if it's a firmware issue and work on a fix.

This does not sound like normal behavior. A T4i should not lock up so completely that even the power switch won’t respond.

If you can reproduce the freeze consistently—especially when changing the mode dial during Live View—that points to a likely firmware or hardware fault rather than simple user error. Since no firmware update was available for the T4i in the provided answers, the best next step is to have Canon service inspect it, or exchange the camera with the retailer if it is still within the return period.

If possible, document the exact steps that trigger the freeze and report them to Canon. That can help confirm whether it’s a known bug and whether service or a future firmware fix is needed.

Removing the battery is a practical reset when a camera locks up, but it shouldn’t be something you need to do regularly.
