Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 focus ring is loose, squeaks, and won’t focus manually

My Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 lens makes a squeaking, metal-on-metal sound when I try to focus. The focus ring feels loose and wobbly, and the lens seems stuck near a far focus point. It also doesn’t seem to focus in manual mode. The exterior looks fine otherwise. Is this normal for this lens, or does it indicate a fault?

Unfortunately, it seems your lens is broken based on the description.
Repair or replacement is probably required to restore full operation.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
This sounds like a fault, not normal behavior.
One important detail: the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L and 85mm f/1.2L II use focus-by-wire manual focus. The focus ring is not mechanically linked to the optics, so in MF the ring only works when the camera is powered on and its metering/focus system is active. If the camera is asleep or inactive, turning the ring won’t do anything.
That said, a loose/wobbly focus ring plus squeaking or metal-on-metal noise strongly suggests the lens has a mechanical or internal drive problem. Since both AF and MF rely on the lens motor to move the focusing elements, failure there can affect both modes.
If the camera is awake and the lens still squeaks, won’t focus, or feels loose, the lens likely needs professional repair or replacement.
