This sounds like a fault, not normal behavior.

One important detail: the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L and 85mm f/1.2L II use focus-by-wire manual focus. The focus ring is not mechanically linked to the optics, so in MF the ring only works when the camera is powered on and its metering/focus system is active. If the camera is asleep or inactive, turning the ring won’t do anything.

That said, a loose/wobbly focus ring plus squeaking or metal-on-metal noise strongly suggests the lens has a mechanical or internal drive problem. Since both AF and MF rely on the lens motor to move the focusing elements, failure there can affect both modes.

If the camera is awake and the lens still squeaks, won’t focus, or feels loose, the lens likely needs professional repair or replacement.
