Can you stop the Pentax K-5 rear 4-way controller from switching between AF point and quick-settings modes?

On the Pentax K-5, the rear 4-way controller can either move the selected autofocus point or act as quick access for settings like white balance, drive mode, flash, and color options. I often shoot with a manually selected AF point, but sometimes pick up the camera and find the controller is still in quick-settings mode, so pressing an arrow changes a setting instead of moving the focus point.

Is there any way to disable this behavior, remap another button for those settings, or make the camera return to AF point selection mode after power-off? If not, is there at least a reliable way to tell which mode the controller is currently in while shooting?

The manual pretty much says no, the OK button on the rear controls this toggle. It does say, though, that when in the mode to adjust focus there's a little rectangular controller icon that appears in the viewfinder. I checked that on my K-5 and the icon will appear down and immediately to the left of the shutter speed value. So not ideal but at least there's a visual indicator when shooting if you can get used to looking for that before adjusting.

Anyways. that's what I found, but the manual is online at the Pentax site if you want to dig around some more.

Based on the manual and user experience, the K-5 does not offer a way to disable that toggle behavior, remap it to another button, or force the camera to reset to AF-point mode at power-off. The rear OK button is the control used to switch the 4-way controller between AF-point selection and quick-settings mode.

What you can do is watch for the viewfinder indicator: when the controller is in focus-point selection mode, a small rectangular controller icon appears in the viewfinder, just down and to the left of the shutter speed display. That won’t prevent accidental setting changes, but it does give you a quick visual check before using the arrows.

So the practical answer is: no workaround in-camera, but there is a viewfinder cue to confirm the current mode.
