I’d like to use an iPad for instant image review while shooting, similar to tethering. Is it possible to connect a camera directly to an iPad, or is the only practical option some kind of wireless transfer workflow? If it can be done, what methods are available?

You could use an Eye-Fi Pro Card and an Application on the iPad (or iPhone or Andriod phone or laptop ect.) to read it.
There are a few options for an App. There is the FREE eye-fi iPhone app or you could have a look at Shutter Snitch App which is relativity cheap.
I have not used this approach myself so I cannot say if it is any good however it might do what you want.

Yes—but generally not in the same straightforward way as tethering to a laptop. Based on the answers, a direct DSLR-to-iPad tethered workflow was not really supported at the time. The practical workaround was wireless image transfer.
A common option is an Eye‑Fi Pro SD card, which can send images over Wi‑Fi to an iPad. On the iPad, you’d use either the free Eye‑Fi app or a third-party app like ShutterSnitch to receive and review photos.
There are also more convoluted setups discussed online, and the iPad Camera Connection Kit has been mentioned as part of some workflows, but the community answers don’t confirm a simple, reliable direct tethered connection from a Wi‑Fi DSLR to an iPad.
So the short answer is: yes, you can review images on an iPad while shooting, but it’s typically done via wireless transfer rather than true direct tethering.
