In Lightroom, the crop overlay grid is white, which can be hard to see on very bright or low-contrast images. Is there any built-in setting or workaround to make the crop grid more visible, such as changing its color?

You suggested you are fine with a "hack" more or less. You could create a virtual copy of the image, and throw the exposure of that virtual copy significantly darker to help with the visibility of the grid. Once you have the crop as desired, sync the crop only back to the original master image, and delete the virtual copy. It would take a few extra seconds but not too long.

Lightroom does not appear to offer a built-in way to change the crop grid color. A practical workaround is to create a virtual copy, reduce the exposure enough to make the white crop grid easier to see, set your crop there, then sync or copy only the crop settings back to the original image and delete the virtual copy. It adds a few seconds, but it can make precise placement—such as lining up rule-of-thirds points—much easier on very bright photos.
