I have a pair of Yongnuo YN-622C wireless TTL flash triggers for Canon and I’m considering buying a used AlienBees AB800 studio strobe. Can the YN-622C trigger the AB800, and if so, what cable or connection is needed? Also, are there any limitations or reliability issues to be aware of?

You can, using the sync port on the Yongnuo trigger. However, AlienBees use a 3.5mm mono sync, so you'll need a cord that can connect the two up. Fortunately, they exist and Paul Buff sells them. You can probably also find smaller cables, but you may want to consider the long ones anyways as they may let you do some funky strobe positioning, behind things that might block the radio signal.

As a note, if the AB800 you get has the complete shipping kit, it will include this cable. It's used, though, so may have long since been lost. You never know.

Yes — a YN-622C can trigger an AlienBees AB800 as a manual radio trigger by connecting the receiver’s sync port to the AB800’s 3.5mm mono sync input.

What you need:

  • A suitable sync cable, typically PC-to-3.5mm mono, depending on which sync port version your YN-622C uses.

Important limitations:

  • You won’t get TTL control with the AB800; it will fire as a manual studio strobe.
  • Hypersync/supersync-style faster-than-X-sync use is generally not considered workable with this combination.
  • Some users report intermittent triggering with AB800 units specifically, even though the same triggers work more reliably with some other strobes. So basic compatibility exists, but reliability may vary by unit/setup.

If the used AB800 includes its original accessories, the needed sync cable may already be in the kit.
