Can the Canon EOS R7 charge over USB with third-party USB-C PD chargers?

After updating my Canon EOS R7 to firmware 1.6.0, I saw that the camera can charge its battery in-camera over USB. Canon documentation mentions the PD-E1 adapter, but it’s unclear whether that means Canon’s own adapter is required. Can the R7 charge from standard third-party USB-C Power Delivery chargers and cables, or is it effectively limited to Canon’s adapter?

I don't know your specific model but, my M6 Mark II requires specifically USB Power Delivery (not the Qualcomm stuff) and I've been able to charge it with a laptop charger and a GaN high-power PD charger. I think it may require chargers that can provide more than the minimum 5v, possibly 9v+. It does not seem to charge off lower-power phone chargers, but thos might just be Qualcomm Quick-Charge again.
Given the name of the recommended charger is PD-E1 (for Power Delivery) I assume the same applies to your camera. Any higher-power PD charger like a laptop or Switch charger should work.

It’s unlikely to be vendor-locked to Canon’s PD-E1 specifically. The key requirement is usually USB Power Delivery (USB-PD), not a brand-specific charger.
Based on the community experience shared, Canon cameras that support in-body USB charging may work with third-party USB-PD sources such as laptop chargers or higher-power GaN chargers. Lower-power phone chargers often won’t work, especially if they only provide basic 5V output or use a different fast-charge standard like Qualcomm Quick Charge instead of USB-PD.
So for the EOS R7, the practical takeaway is:
- use a USB-C charger that supports USB Power Delivery
- a charger capable of more than basic 5V may be needed
- a proper USB-C cable rated for PD is also advisable
Canon’s PD-E1 is the officially recommended option, but that does not necessarily mean only Canon chargers will work.
