Can Spyder3 software measure or calibrate monitor brightness to a target value?

I want to calibrate my monitor to a specific luminance target, such as 100 cd/m², rather than just adjusting brightness to a subjective “comfortable” level. Some monitor calibration software lets you set a target brightness and then measures/adjusts toward it, which is useful for matching screen brightness to prints more reliably.

Does Datacolor Spyder3 software support measuring monitor brightness or calibrating to a defined luminance value? If not in the original software, is it available in a newer version?

The new version of Spyder3Elite, v4.0, supports brightness, as well as a bunch of other measurements and software-based adjustments. It is far richer calibration software than the Sypder3Elite 3.x software. An upgrade costs $99, but it is pretty worth it.

Yes—according to the community answer, newer Spyder3Elite software added brightness support. Specifically, Spyder3Elite v4.0 can handle brightness measurement/targeting, along with other added calibration and software-based adjustment features.

So if you’re using the older Spyder3Elite 3.x software, it may not provide the luminance-target workflow you want. Upgrading to the newer Spyder3Elite software is the suggested solution.

In general, calibrating to a defined monitor luminance can help produce more consistent screen-to-print matching, especially when you’re aiming for a print-friendly display brightness such as around 100 cd/m².
