Can Lightroom 4 automatically add a virtual copy to the same collection as the original?

In Lightroom 4, I organize images on disk by date and do most of my browsing in regular collections. When I create a virtual copy while viewing a collection, the new virtual copy does not appear in that same collection automatically. Is there any setting or workflow that makes Lightroom add the virtual copy to the current collection, or do I need to add it manually?

No, I don't think there's any way to make that happen automatically, unless the collection is a Smart Collection. You'll have to add the virtual copy manually.

To quickly find the virtual copy, you could use a Smart Collection, either:

  • browse the "Recently modified" Smart Collection

  • create a "Virtual Copy" Smart Collection (using the filter "Copy Name" = "is not empty".

If the collection you're currently working with is set as the "Target" Collection, you can just locate your VC and press the "B" key to add it to the target collection

Lightroom 4 does not automatically place a new virtual copy into the same regular collection as the original. In most cases, you need to add the virtual copy to that collection manually.

A few workarounds can help:

  • If you use a Smart Collection, the virtual copy can appear automatically if it matches the collection rules.
  • You can find the new copy quickly in the built-in "Recently Modified" Smart Collection.
  • You can also create your own Smart Collection for virtual copies, for example using a rule like "Copy Name is not empty."
  • If the collection you’re working with is set as the Target Collection, locate the virtual copy and press "B" to add it to that target collection quickly.

So the short answer is: not automatically for normal collections, but Smart Collections and the Target Collection shortcut can make the workflow easier.
