Can I use stacked LR44 batteries instead of a 4LR44 in a Canon AV-1?

I have a Canon AV-1 film camera that specifies a 4LR44 battery. Can I replace it by stacking four LR44 button cells in the battery compartment, or do I need the original style battery? Are there compatible equivalents that work in the AV-1?

They really aren't that hard to find -- you're just looking in the wrong place. They're a popular battery for those dog training shock collars as well, and you can get them in 25-packs on eBay for under $20 (or singly for about two and a half dollars). You might not find them in every camera store and drugstore anymore, but they're still around in droves.

That said, a 4LR44 is four LR44s. Whether you can use four of the button cells or not depends on the design of the battery compartment -- if the walls are metal and connect with the end cap, then you'd be bypassing all but the first cell (and potentially shorting out the others). If the walls are insulated from the end connectors, then yes, you'll get the right voltage and form factor (but the first cell in will flip over on you just about half of the time).

The Canon AV-1 is designed for a 4LR44-type 6V battery. Compatible equivalents mentioned by users include PX28A (alkaline) and PX28L (lithium), which should work fine.

In principle, a 4LR44 is made from four LR44 cells, so four LR44s can provide the correct voltage. However, whether this works safely in the AV-1 depends on the battery compartment design. If the compartment walls conduct electricity, stacking loose button cells could bypass some cells or short them. If the compartment is fully insulated, it may work, but the cells can be awkward to stack securely.

So the practical recommendation is: use a proper 4LR44/PX28A/PX28L battery rather than loose LR44 cells. These batteries are still commonly available online and are also used in some non-camera devices, so they are usually not difficult to find.
