Can I use an adapter to replace a 2CR5 battery with separate cells in a Canon EOS Elan?

My Canon EOS Elan uses a 2CR5 battery. Since a 2CR5 is effectively a combined battery pack, I’m wondering whether there’s an adapter that lets me use separate, cheaper cells instead. Specifically, can I replace a 2CR5 with two CR2 batteries or a similar setup?

Adapters do exist to convert CR123 to 2CR5, but I haven't seen any actually for sale. It might not matter, though -- seems like you can get 2CR5 batteries for around $4 each, which is about the same as the price of a pair of CR2 or CR123 cells.

Adapters have existed for using other lithium cells in place of a 2CR5, particularly CR123-based adapters, but they do not appear to be common or easy to find. Based on the available information, there isn’t a widely available adapter for using two CR2 cells as a direct 2CR5 replacement.

In practice, this may not be worth pursuing anyway: 2CR5 batteries are often priced similarly to buying two individual lithium cells, so there may be little or no cost savings. For a Canon EOS Elan, the simplest and most reliable option is usually to use a standard 2CR5 battery made for the camera.
