I want to transfer photos from XQD cards to a MacBook Pro that only has USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports. Is there an XQD reader with a USB-C connection, or do I need to use an adapter?

To my knowledge no such device exists. You're stuck using a USB-3.1 to USB-C adapter until someone decides to link two niche devices to each other.

Based on the answers provided, a dedicated USB-C XQD reader was not known to be available at the time. The practical solution is to use a standard XQD reader with a USB 3.x connection plus a USB-C adapter for your MacBook Pro.

Also note that USB-C describes the connector shape, not necessarily the data standard. Your MacBook Pro’s USB-C ports also support Thunderbolt 3, so in principle a higher-speed reader could use Thunderbolt over the same port type.

One answer also notes that CFexpress readers may be relevant because early CFexpress Type B media/readers are related to the XQD form factor, and some are backward-compatible with XQD. If you’re shopping, check the reader’s specs carefully to confirm explicit XQD support before buying.

So: yes, you can access your photos, but the safest expectation is to use an adapter unless you find a reader specifically advertised as USB-C or Thunderbolt with XQD compatibility.
