I have a Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8D and know the Nikon HB-1 and HB-15 hoods fit it. Is there a Nikon or third-party petal/tulip hood that works well on this lens, or is a round hood the better choice?

The front of the AF Zoom-Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8D (both the hood bayonet and filter thread) rotates during focus. Therefore a petal type lens hood would not be correctly aligned most of the time. Hence the recommended hood(s) for this lens are of the simple round type.

A petal/tulip hood is generally not a good match for the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8D. On this lens, the front section rotates during focusing, including the hood bayonet/filter-thread area. Because petal hoods need to stay in a specific orientation, they will usually become misaligned as the lens focuses.
That’s why the commonly recommended hoods for this lens are simple round hoods such as the HB-1 or HB-15.
A third-party tulip hood may physically fit, and some users report making them work by tightening or taping them in place, but you’d need to test carefully for vignetting/light falloff, especially at the wide end. So while it may be possible to improvise, the practical and correct choice for this lens is a round hood rather than a petal design.
