Can I use a Pentax K-mount 50mm f/1.7 on a Canon EOS body with an adapter?

My dad has a Sears KS-2 with a 50mm f/1.7 lens, which appears to be a Pentax K-mount lens. I’ve seen inexpensive Pentax K to Canon EOS adapter rings, including versions with AF-confirm chips. Has anyone used this kind of adapter successfully, and is it worth doing? I’m fine with manual focus, but I’d like to know what to expect in terms of usability and image quality from older manual-focus primes on a Canon body.

I use an older Pentax 50mm f/1.7 on my 60D and get spectacular results. I have the exact adapter shown in your post and it works great with barely any play between the lens and body.
The only problem with old glass is that it typically has poor handling of flare so be mindful of light sources and use a hood.

Yes—people do use Pentax K-mount 50mm f/1.7 lenses on Canon EOS bodies with simple adapter rings, and the results can be very good. One user reported excellent image quality and a solid fit with very little play.
The main tradeoff is usability: you’ll typically be working fully manually. That usually means focusing first with the lens wide open, then stopping down to the chosen aperture, metering if needed, and taking the shot. An AF-confirm chip may help with focus confirmation, but it does not make the lens autofocus.
As for image quality, older primes can perform very well, especially for the price, and many are solidly built. A common weakness is flare resistance compared with newer lenses, so avoid strong light sources hitting the front element and use a lens hood when possible.
So if you’re comfortable with manual focus and manual aperture control, adapting that lens to Canon EOS is a reasonable and worthwhile option.
