Can I use a larger screen for live view to improve manual focus in macro photography?

I’m shooting macro on a tripod and finding precise manual focus difficult because depth of field is so shallow. Right now I use the camera’s live view and magnify the image with the +/- buttons, but I’d like a larger display to judge focus more accurately. Is there an external screen or better setup for this? I’m especially interested in options that work well on a tripod without disturbing framing or focus.

You are looking for an HDMI monitor.

Here you go, BHPHoto has 116 results for that.

Yes. The two common options are:

  1. External HDMI monitor — If your camera outputs live view over HDMI, you can connect a larger field monitor and use that as a bigger screen for checking focus.

  2. Tethered shooting to a computer — This is often the better tripod-based solution for macro. Many cameras can be controlled from a computer using manufacturer software (for example, Canon EOS Utility). You get live view on a much larger screen, can inspect focus more critically, and can change settings without touching the camera, which helps avoid shifting framing or focus.

For tripod macro work, tethering is usually the most practical alternative because it combines a large preview with remote camera control. An HDMI monitor is simpler if you want a standalone screen, but tethering gives you more control overall.
