I’m new to photography and have been using a Nikon D5100 with the standard 18–55mm lens for about two months. I’ve mostly just been going out and shooting whatever I see, but I’m still confused about how to use a DSLR well.
Can photography be learned on your own, and are there good websites or other resources for beginners? I’m also wondering how people know when they can call themselves a photographer or a professional photographer.

It is eminently possible to teach yourself photography, as there are a vast amount of resources available these days to enable you to do just that. Perhaps a good place to start would be to get a book on general photography techniques, using that to learn the proper terms to search for online. The web has thousands of tutorials and blogs - just search for photography tutorials and browse.
There are no rules to when you can 'call yourself' a photographer. Technically you are a professional photographer once your main income comes from selling your photographs. However, it will probably take a lot of time and practice before you can start taking photos that sell, though this of course depends on how talented you are. I would concentrate on thoroughly learning the basics than thinking about the commercial aspects at the moment.
As for slow motion pictures, by which I think you mean long-exposure pictures, they can be taken with your DSLR and any lens. Read your manual and look for Shutter Priority and Bulb modes, and search the Web for 'how to take long exposure photographs'. The idea is that the shutter is open for a long time, blurring motion.

Yes — photography is absolutely something you can teach yourself. A good approach is to start with a beginner book or tutorial series on general photography so you learn the basic terms and concepts, then practice regularly and look up specific topics as questions come up.
Useful beginner resources mentioned by the community include online tutorials, training sites such as lynda.com and Kelby resources, and beginner-friendly sites like Digital Photography School. The key is not just reading, but trying different settings and seeing how your photos change.
As for becoming a “photographer,” there’s no official threshold — if you take photos, you’re a photographer. “Professional photographer” usually means photography is a significant source of income, and that also requires business skills, not just camera skills.
So the best place to start is: learn the basics, shoot often, review your results, and keep practicing. Improving enough to earn money can take time, but self-teaching is completely realistic.
