I want to control a Canon EOS 500D (Rebel T1i) from a program running on Linux for shooting remotely. I have tried gPhoto2, but it does not seem very stable. Are there any other existing solutions for camera control on Linux?

I don't know of any other software than gphoto, which you mentioned. The only other solution I can think of is actually running canon's software with Wine. Don't know if it's worth the effort though. I never really tried.

On Linux, gPhoto2 is the main existing option for programmatic control of a Canon EOS 500D. Based on the answers provided, there is no commonly recommended native alternative.
If gPhoto2 is not stable enough for your setup, the only other suggestion mentioned is trying Canon’s own camera control software through Wine. That may work in some cases, but it is not guaranteed and may not be worth the extra effort.
So in practice:
- Primary Linux option: gPhoto2
- Possible workaround: Canon software via Wine
If you need reliable scripted control specifically on Linux, gPhoto2 remains the standard starting point.
