Can I make a Canon EOS 400D fire the shutter without autofocus confirmation?

I’m using a Canon EOS 400D and sometimes, in fast-changing situations, the camera won’t take the shot because autofocus hasn’t locked yet. As a beginner I may still be adjusting settings or composing when something spontaneous happens, and I’d rather capture an imperfect photo than miss it entirely. Is there a way to let the camera release the shutter even if focus isn’t confirmed?

For most users, the vast majority of the time the issue is focus confirmation. Turning autofocus off by sliding the AF/M switch on the lens from AF to M will allow the shutter to release without AF confirmation. Of course you will need to focus the lens yourself by turning the focus ring on the lens. If you have One Shot AF mode selected the focus confirmation light in the lower right hand corner of the viewfinder will continue to indicate when the lens is focused on the selected AF point(s).

If you don't have a copy of the EOS 400D Instruction Manual you can view or download it in .pdf format from here.

Yes. On the EOS 400D, the usual reason the shutter won’t fire is that autofocus has not achieved focus confirmation in One Shot AF. A simple workaround is to switch the lens from AF to M using the AF/M switch on the lens. In manual focus, the camera will let you release the shutter without waiting for autofocus confirmation.

You’ll need to focus by turning the lens focus ring yourself, but if One Shot AF is selected, the focus confirmation indicator in the viewfinder can still help show when the selected AF point is in focus.

So if your priority is “get the shot now,” switching to manual focus is the practical way to avoid the autofocus lockout.
