Can I leave a lens hood on when storing a camera in a bag?

Is it safe to keep a lens hood mounted on a lens all the time, including when the camera or lens is stored in a bag? Could this damage the hood, lens, or camera, or is it mainly a space issue?

If the bag is subject to enough force to damage the hood, then I'd be worried for the lens/camera. There should be no problem leaving the hood on, however it can take up a lot more space. For this reason most hoods can be reversed for storage.
If they can't be reversed, I often take the hood off and place it loose around the lens for extra protection.

Yes—generally it’s fine to leave a lens hood on when putting a camera or lens in a bag. If an impact is strong enough to damage the hood, you’d usually also be concerned about the camera or lens itself.
The main downside is bulk: a mounted hood takes up more space and may make packing awkward. That’s why many lens hoods are designed to reverse onto the lens for storage. If your hood doesn’t reverse, removing it and placing it around the lens can save space and add a bit of protection.
So, it’s not inherently dangerous to keep the hood mounted; it’s mostly a convenience and packing-space decision.
