Can I convert a speedlight softbox to a Bowens mount?

I have a softbox that was originally used with a speedlight and uses an S-type/speedlight-style speed ring. I recently bought a modifier with a Bowens mount and like the flexibility of using Bowens-compatible lights and modifiers. On my older softbox, the mount rotates, but I can’t tell whether it can be removed or replaced. Is it possible to swap the existing ring for a Bowens speed ring, or convert this kind of speedlight softbox another way?

In the first and last images you can see three silver screws with washers; those secure the speed ring to the umbrella frame and allow the speed ring to rotate. The fist speedring is an S-type (speedlight), and the last is a bowens type. Between those two it is likely that the speedrings can be interchanged.

The construction of yours looks to be different and I doubt it can be swapped to a different speedring. However, you can get an S-type bracket that accepts bowens mount modifiers rather cheaply. That would allow you to mount your bowens type umbrella to your speedlights.

Usually only some softboxes let you swap speed rings. If the ring is held to the umbrella frame by visible screws, those screws secure the speed ring while still allowing it to rotate, and on some designs the ring can be exchanged. But based on the construction you described, your older softbox likely uses a different design and probably isn’t meant to accept a different speed ring.

So in practice, it’s unlikely that your current softbox can be cleanly converted to Bowens mount.

The simplest workaround is to use an S-type bracket that accepts Bowens-mount modifiers. That lets you use Bowens-compatible softboxes or umbrellas with a speedlight, without modifying the original softbox itself.
