Can I adjust a Canon 600EX II-RT's manual power on the flash when it's mounted on a Yongnuo YN-622C II?

I’m using a Canon 5D Mark III with two Yongnuo YN-622C II triggers. One YN-622C II is on the camera with a Canon 600EX II-RT mounted on top, and the other is connected to a second manual flash off-camera.

When the 600EX II-RT is mounted on the on-camera YN-622C II, I can’t change its manual flash power on the flash itself. I have to use the camera’s flash control menu instead, which is slow when shooting moving subjects.

Is there a way to control the 600EX II-RT’s manual output directly on the flash while it’s mounted on the YN-622C II, or is this a limitation of the Yongnuo 622 system?

What you are experiencing is a design limitation of the 622 system.

Your solution is to not use the 600EX II on the camera. If you were to put a simple manual flash on the YN-622C II, on top of the camera, flash power can be adjusted on the flash itself.

Older Canon flash units like the 430EX, 550EX, and 580EX will also work this way because they were released before Canon had an in-camera flash menu.

There is an excellent guide for the Yongnuo 622 system available here: The Other YN-622C User Guide

This is a known design limitation of the Yongnuo YN-622C system.

With a Canon 600EX II-RT mounted on a YN-622C II, manual flash settings are controlled through the camera’s flash menu rather than from the flash’s own controls. So in your setup, needing to change power from the 5D Mark III menu is expected behavior.

If you want to adjust power directly on the flash itself, the usual workaround is to use a simple manual flash on the on-camera YN-622C II instead of the 600EX II-RT. Some older Canon Speedlites released before Canon’s in-camera flash menu system, such as the 430EX, 550EX, and 580EX, can also behave this way.

So: no, there isn’t a way to make the 600EX II-RT’s manual power directly adjustable on the flash while it’s mounted on the YN-622C II; it’s a system limitation.
