Can I add private notes to photos in Lightroom 5?

I’d like to add notes to images in Lightroom 5 for my own reference, such as reminders about lighting or how a shot was taken (for example, “low sun over left shoulder”). Is there a field or workflow for storing this kind of private information so it won’t be visible to clients or included in exports?

You can use the Metadata Wrangler plugin from Jeffrey Friedl, in which you can strip some of the metadata at export time.
According to this thread you can also use the Minimize embedded data option at export time to remove keywords.

Yes. In Lightroom 5, the usual place for private shooting notes is the metadata fields such as Caption/Description or keywords. Lightroom itself doesn’t have a special “private notes” field that is guaranteed to stay hidden everywhere, so if you use those fields you should remove them on export if you don’t want clients to see them.
From the community answers, two ways to help with that are:
- use Jeffrey Friedl’s Metadata Wrangler plugin to strip selected metadata during export
- use Lightroom’s export option to minimize embedded data, which can also remove keywords
So the workable approach is: store your reminders in metadata while editing, then strip or minimize metadata when exporting client-facing files.
