Can Canon EW-83J and EW-83H lens hoods be interchanged on an EF 24-105mm f/4L used on APS-C?

I have a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM with its standard EW-83H hood, and I also own an EW-83J hood made for the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. Since I only use APS-C bodies, I’m wondering if the deeper EW-83J hood can be used on the 24-105mm for better physical protection.

The mounts appear to have the same diameter and bayonet style, but I want to know whether the EW-83J will safely mount on the 24-105mm without getting stuck, and whether using it on a crop sensor body could cause vignetting or any other image-quality issues.

Yes, because you are using a crop camera, you can use the EW-83J hood on your 24-105 without any vignetting or other effects.

Here is a chart that shows many other alternate lens and hood combinations.

Yes. Based on the shared Canon hood naming and mount design, the EW-83J should mount on the EF 24-105mm the same way the EW-83H does. For most Canon hoods, matching the numeric part of the hood name usually means the bayonet mount is compatible, with a few exceptions for non-bayonet designs.

On an APS-C camera, using the deeper EW-83J on the 24-105mm is generally fine and should not cause vignetting or other image-quality problems, because the crop sensor uses a smaller portion of the image circle than full frame. That’s why a hood designed for a less-wide field of view can work on the 24-105mm when the lens is only used on crop bodies.

So: yes, it should fit, and yes, it’s a reasonable idea on APS-C if you want more shading/protection. Just keep the EW-83H for full-frame use, where the wider 24mm field of view needs the shallower hood.
