Can an iPhone 4S photograph the Aurora Borealis, and what else do I need?

I want to photograph the Northern Lights and currently have an iPhone 4S, an Olloclip 3-in-1 lens, and apps like LightTrac and Instagram. Is this setup capable of capturing the aurora at all? If so, what settings, apps, or accessories would I need? Would a tripod or a different camera be a better option?

You need to be at the perfect latitude(65-72deg), on a crisp, cold, clear, and cloudless night, with zero light pollution, and a huge amount of luck. Even then you are pushing it with equipment like that.

An iPhone 4S may capture something, but it’s very limited for aurora photography. The main challenge is that the Northern Lights are dim and usually require long exposures, a steady camera, dark skies, and some luck.

What helps:

  • A long-exposure/manual camera app that allows slow shutter speeds and control over ISO/focus.
  • A tripod or solid phone mount, because handheld shots won’t work for multi-second exposures.
  • A clear, cold, dark night with little to no light pollution, ideally in a good aurora zone.
  • Some post-processing afterward.

What to expect:

  • You might record faint color or glow, but image quality will likely be limited.
  • The Olloclip may help widen the view, but it won’t solve the phone sensor’s low-light limitations.
  • A compact camera or other camera with better low-light performance and manual long exposures is a better choice if you want stronger results.

So: yes, possibly, but only modestly. For the best chance, use a manual/slow-shutter app plus a tripod, and keep expectations realistic.
